*Dear Friends,*
Greetings from the Global Fund for Women! This historic year has begun on a
note of spectacular hope with the first African-American taking the U.S.
Presidential oath of office. We have heard messages of joy and solidarity
regarding President Obama's election from women's groups all over the world.
At the same time, many of our grantee partners are still grappling with the
devastating effects of unprecedented crises in many countries of the world.
The flaring up of political and military conflicts, added to those that
continue to drag on, have made the lives of millions of women untenable. The
global economic recession, and the growth of religious fundamentalisms have
deepened and continue to challenge women's movements and organizations that
are working for the rights of the marginalized.
Yet, we cannot help but celebrate with the world's women one of President
Obama's first acts – the revoking of the Global Gag rule. Since 2001, this
policy has severely eroded women's opportunities around the globe to access
information and services on reproductive health. Called the Global Gag Rule
because it prohibits U.S. funding for organizations that so much as speak
about abortion to women and girls seeking reproductive and family planning
services, it also blocked U.S. funds for organizations that provide
abortions and any abortion-related services, or advocate in any way to make
abortion legal or safe.
*To date, the Global Fund is proud to have supported 1,600 organizations in
126 countries that work on reproductive health and rights.* Groups in Latin
America such as Catholics for Free Choice have resisted the restrictions
imposed by the gag rule. From Bolivia to Mexico to Argentina, these groups
have worked within and across religious communities to push for women's
sexual rights from the grassroots to the governmental policy level.

to supporting women's reproductive rights and choices, *the Global Fund has
awarded over $8.6 million in the past year in 110 countries*, to support
women's efforts to build movements across geographical, ideological, social
and political borders.
Buoyed by the cautious optimism that accompanies the start of this new
presidency, we will continue to stand strongly in solidarity with our
grantee partners as they strive to overturn deeply entrenched oppressions
and expand women's opportunities and rights within their societies. We thank
you for your continued engagement and support.
In Solidarity,
