This program is preliminary and will be subject to change. Please note that two or three workshops run parallel out of which you can attend one. We will do our best to make sure you can attend your first options but if you want to make sure you can attend your first choices please rush to the first computer and e-mail us your “pick of the workshops”. It is also possible to register at the information desk at /ETC, but it would help us if you gave us an idea of what workshops you are interested in in advance.

Entry fees

Five day ticket: 200 SEK (approx 18 Euros).

One day ticket: 50 SEK


Even if you are interested in some particular workshops we warmly recommend to hang around before and after workshops to meet with other participants! Maybe you'll find a workshop to attend that you hadn't thought of or meet someone you hadn't met otherwise:) 


Workshop C Thursday: Build your own guitar pedal

Equipment for this workshop costs an additional 250-450 SEK depending on which pedal you choose to build. 


Locations


Most workshops will be held at HUMlab, a few of them are scattered around at Bildmuseet and Verket. The dinner on Friday is at Studiefrämjandet.


HUMlab is located in the Social Sciences building at Umeå University, ask for University library, follow the arrows to HUMlab and take the stairs one floor below. Bus number 1, 5, 6, 7 , 8 and 9 will take you from City Centre to University.


Bildmuseet is 15 minutes walk from HUMlab.


Verket is located at Västra Strandgatan 7, five minutes walk from City Centre.


Studiefrämjandet is located at Ridvägen 10 minutes walk from City Centre.

Workshop A at HUMlab, Computer lab

HTML/CSS workshop - Audrey Samson


HTML, hypertext markup language is the 'language' of the internet HTML is responsible for the structuring the content of the site. CSS, cascading style sheets are the code which works together with HTML and determines the 'style' of the page. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce these notions and learn how to use them to build/update/customize a website/blog. If you have a specific request, question, or problem you are facing, you are encouraged to come. We will try to shape the workshop according the different skill levels and specific desires of participants.


Necessary materials:

-Bring your laptop

-Have a text editor already installed (e.g. Text Wrangler, Notepad, Wordpad, Editplus).

-Have a web browser already installed (e.g. Firefox, Opera)

Hardware Crash Course - Donna Metzlar


The Computer Hardware crash course will consist of taking apart a computer and putting it back together again. We will make tangible such jargon as: ports, plugs, bus, interface, PCB, cards, processor, memory, storage, cache, master, slave and the BIOS. Participants do not need any previous experience or knowledge to be able to follow the workshop. Please do bring along some paper, a pencil and your questions. We will provide the computes and screwdrivers.


Only 12 participants! Please note that the workshop runs till 20:00.

Wearable fashion - Kyveli Vezani


Fashion design with fabrics and circuits. We are going to use fabric and conductive thread, little lights (LEDs) and wire to create wearable technology and interactive jewellery.


Workshop D at HUMlab, the Glass room

Vocabulaboratories - Manuela Zechner and Anja Kangieser


How do we speak about what we do and what role does self-representation play in our (working) lives? When are words and discourses important to us, and when do we need to escape them? In this 3-hour workshop we will try to share both our poetics and our strategies around representation. We'd like to work on departing from the well trodden paths of our individual and collective professional vocabularies, and instead try to openly speak about the desires and problems that come with representing ourselves and our work to others.


This workshop will be held on Thursday as well.

Linux workshop - Helga


Installing the open source operating system and getting started. LINUX install party! Bring your laptop along. This workshop is good to combine with Workshop C later in the afternoon.


Workshop B at HUMlab, Annex

DIY instruments – Joan Healy


Joan will be demonstrating some of the musical experiments that she has been working on over the last year. Participants will be taught some basic soldering techniques such as how to make contact microphones. You will be shown how to use these to make instruments out of different parts of their bodies such as stringed instruments from their hair. Participants are encouraged to be creative and experimental. They should bring their ideas and different acoustic objects with them such as bowls and ceramic pottery to use in making resonating chambers for their instruments. We will then amplify the sounds to make a noise orchestra!

Portable Pixels : flash accessories! - Audrey Samson


Make accessories that light up with the simplest electronic circuit. What will you light up? Your neck, your arm, the inside of your pockets? What will make it light up? The touch of your fingers? closing a hook? The tilt of your arm?. This workshop does not involve soldering or any electronics knowledge!

Ubuntu and Bluetooth - Tatjana Laursen


Ubuntu is a free Linux-based operating system with a wide array of free and easy-to-use alternatives for most tasks. Come and see what the computer salesperson didn't tell as free software is bad for business. Bring your laptop and get the needed help to try out using Ubuntu. If you have a bluetooth phone and computer, you can also try it out with a remote control!

Most people don't know much about open source. During this session we will discuss new developments and changes within the area.

The film describes the influence of the Jacquard Loom on Lovelace and Babbage, and the importance of Lovelace’s work to conceive of the idea of a computer in 1843.

Running Stitch, Hamilton - Southern & St Amand

You are invited take part in this GPS mapping project facilitated by artist Jen Southern. Using GPS Mobile Phones visitors to the gallery are invited to take an hour walk around Umea which will be projected onto a hanging canvas in the gallery and stitched by their friends.

SketchPatch - Sophie McDonald

Sketchpatch is a new website for people to learn processing by creating beautiful drawings and animations live online. Sophie will give introductions to the site, and show you how to get started by copying and modifying other people’s code.

You Are What You Buy - Michele Pred

This embroidery of a 2D bar-code can be read by a cell-phone. Visitors to the exhibition can download a Java reader from Pred’s website onto their mobile phone, and take a photo of the image, which will then decode into a text on their phone. To download the software go to: http://semacode/ota Download the Reader Standalone for Java Phones 1.6. Once the reader program is installed, start the program, aim your camera phone at the code above and then take a photo. The code will then initiate a response on your phone screen.

Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made . Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone. No previous knowledge is required.

General audio introduction. 

This workshop is about generating and recording sound and audio material. How do you edit and manipulate sound? How do you export it in the right format and quality? No previous knowledge is required.

An introduction to live sound reinforcement – Marita Johansson

How does the audio signal make it's way from the output of a DJ-mixer to the front of house speakers and how does it end up in the stage monitors? Why should the DJ keep hands of the gainpots after soundcheck? What is the difference between a mic and line signal? These are some of the questions you get answers to if you attend this three hour workshop, that includes a theoretical and practical introduction to the art and craft of live sound reinforcement.

A workshop about computer game concepts and how they affect real life. 



Workshop E at HUMlab, the Glass room 

Build your own guitar pedal - Ida Lindfors


Are you interested in sound effects and electronics? This workshop starts with a theoretical part where we discuss what a guitar signal is and what different effects do. After that the workshop continues with a practical part where you build your own guitar pedal. No previous knowledge but a bit of patience and some cash is required. 


This workshops costs an extra 450 SEK for the equipment, you will keep the pedal you build.

The topic of this workshop is the Open Usability initiative. We will take a look at their mindset, take a peek at on-going projects and explore some usability methods and best practices ourselves.
