UpStage Workshop

The UpStage Workshop will take place 9am-12 noon on Thursday 29th.

UpStage is an open-source web-based environment for live online performance (cyberformance). Players use graphical avatars, backdrops, props, web cams, text2speech and audio to present live performance to an online audience, who can interact with the performance via a text chat window.

Format:

  • introduction to UpStage: learning the basic operation and rationale behind the software, playing around on the stage, questions (approx 1 hour).
  • divide into smaller groups to develop performance ideas (approx 1 hour).
  • depending on the participants, during the final hour we can divide into those who are interested in discussing the programming side of UpStage, and those who want to develop their performance ideas further.

Preparation:
In order to make the best use of the time, we will endeavour to prepare media beforehand.  If you'd like your own avatar, please take photos of yourself in superhero poses and save as .png. if you didn't get the email from Gloria with all the details, please email Gloria for that (if you don't know Gloria's email then email the list, & if you're not on the list then get on it!).

Please bring headphones! or borrow some for the workshop.

You don't need any particular skills or experience to participate in this workshop - just a good sense of humour and imagination; if you want to familiarise yourself with UpStage before the workshop, visit the UpStage web site.

Facilitators:
The workshop will be facilitated by Helen (online) and by Gloria on-site, with assistance from Helga and Marischka.

I am giving a soldering workshop. we're making this:

and I need to know how many to order.

For this workshop, I need soldering irons and snippers, hopefully in good condition. Should we ask people to bring their own?

Workshops I'd like to attend:

I'd love to attend any of these topics below. These are all intersts and weaknesses of mine.

1. Web Programming 101
I would love a workshop on web programming 101. I'm still not really sure how to do this basic stuff on my laptop. I don't know much about websevers or web programming. I'm a programmer but i've really not done web programming (besides one or two projects) and I was a bit lost.

2. Anything math or Computer Science related

3. Database programming basics
I'm weak in databases too. I have gotten a bit further on databases than web programming, but I still don't feel confident.

4. Linux basics - I'm such a windows person and I really wish that wasn't true. I have a linux laptop but still learning.

Workshops I'd like to give

1. Run a math circle at the conference. This is where a group of people (doesn't matter their background in math) just sit in a circle and discuss some math ideas and try to figure something out together. I have only done it once before but it worked out.

2. I would like to give a talk on basic data structures such that people could program their own data structure (like a linked list or a hash table) So, this would be a data structures 101 where we programmed something together. I would use Python for this.

3. puzzle club - so this would be a time where we could do puzzle's together. I have some puzzles (some logic ones, some games, some physical ones) and anyone interested could meet to try to solve puzzle's together.

marischka's offer is to assist with the UpStage workshop, not to actually lead it herself, so there needs to be a bit more discussion about who can take responsibility on the ground for this one.

there's been a request & enthusiasm for an UpStage workshop : )

i'm really busy with my thesis & won't be physically at the /etc but am keen to see this happen & to support it as much as i can(vicki's also pretty busy). marischka has offered to lead/facilitate on the ground, gloria is also keen & so is helga. & i think also some others ....

it could be an opportunity to begin developing a performance for presentation at the next UpStage festival (about to be announced & happening on 8th august).

my suggestion for the format of the workshop is to have 2 or more sessions of about 3 hours each - ideally in the morning, otherwise it will be the middle of the night for me here in australia. i'm sure the programme is going to be packed but if we could get at least an intro session in near the beginning then whoever is keen can continue on.
